EXPERIMENTS IN SYNTHETIC BIOLOGY
For the project Living Pixels, we experimented with a variety of living organisms to create a living, digital display. Our research followed an experimental process, in which we navigated between human experiments around magic and engagement in a physical/digital world, and technical experiments with V. Fischeri, a strand of bioluminescent bacteria.
USING MACHINE LEARNING TO IDENTifY HUMAN BEHAVIOUR
In order to create Trajectory, a touchless interface that is triggered by a user's behaviour, we designed a custom machine learning algorithm which observes and gathers data on users' behaviour. Using face tracking technology through a simple webcam, we trained the algorithm to identify up to 11 different facial expression - which it then converts into a digital control input.
We deliver workshops to disseminate our knowledge, encourage creativity and innovation, and ensure that others are also designing for the future.
We have held workshops in the UK, South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, China, India, Senegal, Tanzania and are always open to share The F_T_R’s way of thinking with a new part of the world.
We hold 24H, 48H, and week long hackathons, enabling rapid ideation, prototyping, and testing. These are often centered around a new technology, and help develop and find applications for this technology. Past hackathons include Fujitsu, MIT Media Lab, Amazon, and BP.
